Why the screwcap on a bottle of expensive claret? Five per cent of bottles of wine are spoiled by contaminated corks. Natural cork is cut from the cork oak and is prone to mould attacks. Corked wine isn't harmful but it tastes dull and musty and will put you off buying that wine again annoying the wine producer, who has lavished every care on his wine. Screwcaps are as expensive as the best-quality corks - but they're worth it! They're an effective protective seal and never taste musty!
